NERI Energy Research Conference 2007

This conference, a first for NERI, was run in partnership with the Institute of Earth Science and Engineering at The University of Auckland on November 22 and 23 2007 with the theme: ‘Research informing the energy debates’.

This was the first New Zealand conference since 1979 to draw together the nation’s energy researchers to share research insights and discuss research responses to national energy challenges.

Keynote speakers at the conference were:

  • Prof Andy Philpott, Engineering Science, The University of Auckland: incentives and regulation in New Zealand’s wholesale electricity market.
  • Dr Mike Packer, Cawthron Institute: potential roles of microalgae and algal enzyme hydrogenase in renewable energy.
  • Dr Susan Krumdieck, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Canterbury: strategic analysis approach to complex systems, with a case study of transportation fuel supply in New Zealand.
  • Brian Carey, GNS Science: geothermal energy research and its significance for New Zealand in the low carbon era.
  • Prof Philippa Howden-Chapman, University of Otago ( Wellington): housing, health and energy for heating.
  • and Tony Robinson, Ministry of Research, Science and Technology: government policy, strategy and funding relevant to energy issues.
Other presentations focused on one or more of the following themes:
  • bioenergy
  • energy economics and markets
  • energy management
  • distributed generation and industry-specific demand
  • wind, solar and marine energy technologies
  • heat pump and drying technologies
  • geothermal energy
  • social aspects of energy generation and energy consumption
  • energy and health
  • energy aspects of carbon emission management
  • behavioural responses to energy constraints
  • electricity grid management and wind energy
  • transport and energy

At the conference dinner, Prof Dick Bellamy, Dean of The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Science reflected on energy research over the 33 years since the first energy research conference.
