Projects

As well as building strong relationships with industry, government and the wider community, in its first year in 2007/08, NERI undertook a variety of activities that added quality and quantity to energy research and education. The following activities, funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), were completed by June 2008:

1. NERI established a Research Advisory Panel. This review panel, comprising both national and international researchers as well as representatives from the energy industry, ensured that research conducted under the NERI banner was balanced and robust from technological, social and economic perspectives.

2. NERI has assessed the depth and coverage of energy-related teaching programmes at universities around the country. We also consulted with energy employers to find out what gaps are perceived in undergraduate and postgraduate education. We have produced a report summarising our findings.

3. NERI built an online, searchable database of energy researchers from our partners in the energy area. This database covers many disciplines.

4. NERI ran two events in its first year in 2007/08 events. The first conference, run in partnership with the University of Auckland, focused on energy related research and provided an opportunity for peer review across the disciplines. The second, the Energy Transport and Sustainability Symposium held in June 2008, provided an opportunity for government and industry stakeholders to engage with researchers.

5. NERI has run one Master Class for the Energy Federation.

6. NERI has developed an information resource for school administrators on energy use, efficiency and sustainability in the school context.
