Interim Climate Change Committee's Accelerated electrification report released

The Interim Climate Change Committee has released two reports – Action on agricultural emissions and Accelerated electrification.

Accelerated electrification is the final report containing the evidence and analysis, and recommendations, on planning for the transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2035.

On 100% renewable electricity The Committee recommends that the Government:

  1. Prioritises the accelerated electrification of transport and process heat over pursuing 100% renewable electricity by 2035 in a normal hydrological year because this could result in greater greenhouse gas emissions savings while keeping electricity prices affordable.
  2. Investigates the potential for pumped hydro storage to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the electricity system.

The report and associated summary documents, appendices and consultant reports can be found at www.iccc.mfe.govt.nz/what-we-do/energy/electricity-inquiry-final-report.
